The Real Madrid superstar picked his 5th Ballon d’Or award in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris after beating the Argentine and Neymar to the prize.
Cristiano Ronaldo says he wants his rivalry with Lionel Messi to continue after equaling the Barcelona star’s record of five “Ballons d’Or” awards.
The former Manchester United man and the Argentine international have won the last ten Balon d’Or awards, and are the players with the most Ballon d’Or awards ever, and Ronaldo says he wants this to continue.
“I hope to play at this level for a few more years,” he said in Paris as he accepted the award. “I hope the battle with Messi continues, things happen for a reason, I feel good this season and we’ll see what we win at the end of the year.”
The award comes after he led Madrid to La Liga and Champions League victories last season and Ronaldo said he sees it as career highlight.
“I feel very happy. It’s a fantastic moment in my career, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, this year has been great, we won the Champions League and La Liga and, on a personal level, I was a top scorer in the Champions League.
“Trophies help win these awards and we have to thank my colleagues from Madrid and Portugal, it was very important for me.”
The 32-year-old also gave Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar his backing as a future winner.
“He has a lot of talent, a lot of potential, and I’m sure he’ll have some chance to win in the future,” he said after the Brazilian came third in the voting, behind second-placed Messi.
Ronaldo also addressed the rumours from the summer that he was not happy in Madrid and was open to a move to PSG.
“I’m happy at Madrid, I want to stay there, I would like to finish my career at Madrid if possible”.
Finally, Ronaldo reiterated his desire to win seven Ballons d’Or and have seven children after he was asked what he wants for Christmas.
“Another baby … no, it’s a joke, we’re going to enjoy the four of us, I want seven Ballons d’Or and seven children”.
