Ed Sheeran receives MBE from Prince Charles for services to charity and music

Superstar singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran visited Buckingham Palace recently to receive an MBE by the Prince of Wales for a glittering musical career and his charity work, thus, making him a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

The award winning singer, whose latest album Divide spent more than 15 weeks at the top of the charts, received the honour during a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony.

Outside the Palace with the press, Ed confirmed that he would happily perform the first song at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding.

The MBE has a lot of personal meaning for Ed Sheeran. He said; his grandfather, Bill Sheeran who passed away in 2013, was a massive fan of the Royal family and this MBE would have been a huge deal to him.

He had all the commemorative plates and stuff, and he died on this day four years ago, so it’s actually quite a nice full circle thing, I guess he’d be pretty proud.

From sleeping on Jamie Foxx’s sofa as a budding musician to performing to tens of thousands of fans worldwide, the 26-year-old has come a long way since he released his debut album in 2011.

The 26-year-old pop star, who this year topped the charts with his third album Divide, was presented with the honour by Prince Charles for his services to music and charity at Buckingham Palace.

Ed Sheeran said Prince Charles was impressed he was going to play a gig the day after collecting his award. He has notched up three chart topping singles, won a Grammy Award last year and his latest track “Perfect” – newly re-worked as a duet with Beyonce – is expected to become his next No.one.

Ed Sheeran has worked with a range of charities including East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, an organization he supports as an ambassador and has the Duchess of Cambridge as its royal patron.

He has also been named as the biggest star on YouTube in the UK in 2017, topping the site’s most popular video lists for the year.
