Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, has been axed out of office through a bloodless military coup d’etat.
The country’s ruling Zanu-PF party confirmed the end of Mugabe’s 37-year iron grip on power via its Twitter handle on Wednesday.
Mugabe and his wife were arrested by the army on Tuseday in Harare.
The Army officers later went on to take control of the country’s ZBC state broadcaster early on Wednesday morning announcing that the 93-year-old leader and his family were “safe and sound” and were being kept under tight security watch after sounds of gunshots and explosions were heard overnight in the capital
The soldiers were said to have also taken hold of some police officers on Wednesday after taking control of the capital, forcing them to sit down on the side of the road
Vice president E.D Mnangagwa who had been sacked by Mugabe is reported to have already landed at Manyame Air Force Base in the country’s capital to take charge of affairs in the country.
According to reports, Mugabe has agreed to step down and has also negotiated for his wife Grace to be flown out of the country.
The ruling Zanu-PF party, in a statement confirming Mugabe’s removal from power, this morning, said:
“Zimbabwe has not had a coup. There has been a decision to intervene because our constitution had been undermined.
“In the interim, Comrade E Mnagngawa will be President of ZANU PF as per the constitution of our revolutionary organisation.
“ZANU PF has a way of solving our own problems, the situation is stable and Zimbabwe is open for business. There was no coup, but a bloodless peaceful transition- the centre is strong and there is peace with honest leadership.
“There was no coup, only a bloodless transition which saw corrupt and crooked persons being arrested and an elderly man who had been taken advantage of by his wife being detained.
“The few bangs that were heard were from crooks who were resisting arrest, but they are now detained.
“Last night, the first family was detained and are safe, both for the constitution and the sanity of the nation, this was necessary. Neither Zimbabwe nor ZANU are owned by Mugabe and his wife.
“Today begins a fresh new era and comrade Mnangagwa will help us achieve a better Zimbabwe.
“Please note and be warned. Comrade Mnangagwa has not got a twitter account we know of one in his name. It is not him. It’s a supporter or a fake account- but not him.”
