England’s record goalscorer and former captain, Wayne Rooney has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, on Thursday night, according to Sky sources.
Rooney was stopped by police near his home in Cheshire on Thursday night, after an evening out with pals, a week after his retirement.
He was later pulled over and taken to a local police station where he was quizzed by officers.
The striker was on target in each of his first two Premier League appearances this season after rejoining boyhood club Everton from Manchester United.
Rooney’s spokesman told his staff to reply “no comment” to enquiries from journalists
